The Power of Pause

How often do you say yes before you’ve even had a chance to think about it?
I recently had a conversation with my wise colleague, Dr. Lina Slim, that really stuck with me. She shared a piece of advice she’s learned over time: pause before saying yes.
It sounds simple, but it’s not always easy.
Even when you’re overworked, overbooked, and stretched thin, invitations to participate in interesting projects, support meaningful causes, and attend fun social gatherings are still enticing. Our instinct is to say 'yes' right away - to be helpful; to stay involved; to not miss out.

But Dr. Slim explained that she’s learned to pause before responding. Not immediately saying yes or no, but giving herself space to think about whether she truly has the time and capacity. That pause creates something we don’t often give ourselves: room to be intentional.
Because if we’re honest, the pressure to say yes isn’t always about the opportunity itself. Sometimes it’s about not wanting to disappoint others, fall behind, or feel like we’re missing something.
But saying yes to everything often means saying no to our time, our energy, and our well-being.
Pausing gives us the chance to ask: Do I actually have the capacity for this right now? Can I show up in the way this project deserves?
And sometimes, the most thoughtful response isn’t an immediate yes; it’s:“Can I get back to you on this?”
It’s a small shift, but it creates space for more intentional decisions. And it reminds us that protecting our time and energy isn’t selfish, it’s necessary.
It’s something I’m still learning. But I’m starting to see that pausing gives me a moment to be mindful of myself and all the things that matter to me.
Thank you to Dr. Lina Slim for inspiring me to pause.
